The project is located in Plaça Bacardi, a lively and bustling spot in the Horta district of Barcelona. This plaça is always brimming with locals sitting on the terraces watching their children play.
The apartment is part of a tall building from the 1900's, located in front of the square. It is a 100 sqm ground-floor unit with a back patio, characterized by a very narrow rectangular shape and considerable height.
The main challenges were the lack of light, the static train-shape distribution and the lack of privacy in the entrance area, which was completely exposed to the bustling square.
The purpose of the new distribution was to break its narrow and static aspect by alternating open and closed spaces and by playing with different heights.
Initially, we moved all the living spaces towards the entrance, where most of the light comes in. This resulted in less corridor space and an open, fluid space with the living room, dining room and kitchen.
In order to provide privacy, without hiding the main light source provided by the antique glass front door, we designed floor-to-ceiling swivel wood blades, creating a filter, both for the light and for direct view from the square.
Taking advantage of the high ceilings, we created a sort of upper level, composed of 3 interconnecting, alcove-like wooded mezzanines over the corridor. This provided more surface area to the smaller rooms in a very playful way and turned the narrow corridor into a more cozy space.
